Reworld Montgomery, Inc. reported that compliance testing on Dec. 22 and 25, 2025 for Unit 2 of the County's Resource Recovery Facility showed dioxin and furan emissions of 97.79 ng/dscm — more than three times the MDE permitted limit of 30 ng/dscm. Unit 2 had been taken offline Jan. 4, 2026 for a scheduled refurbishment; Reworld performed additional repairs and projects a restart on Feb. 25, 2026, with new compliance testing in early March. The County's DEP has engaged an expert health risk assessor to evaluate potential public health impacts and will release results when available.
