Council Defers Trash Disposal Decision, Keeps Resource Recovery Facility Open

MCCouncil May 21, 2026
The Montgomery County Council declined to act on the County Executive's recommendation to send the county's solid waste to out-of-county landfills in FY27, citing unresolved questions about cost, revenue impact, and environmental effects. Sufficient funding was included in the DEP Recycling and Resource Management budget to maintain operations at the existing Resource Recovery Facility for the fiscal year. The Council stated a full analysis and community engagement process will precede any final decision.
