Montgomery County activated its first locally funded Maryland Mesonet weather station at the Oaks Landfill in Laytonsville on Sept. 2, 2026, funded through the County's Climate Change Planning Non-Departmental Account. Three additional stations are planned for Gaithersburg, Germantown, and Chevy Chase/Silver Spring, with all expected online by end of year. Once complete, 95% of County residents and businesses will be within seven miles of a station.
