County Executive Orders Six-Month Data Center Pause

County Executive Marc Elrich issued an executive order on June 12, 2026 pausing data center development in Montgomery County for six months. Councilmember Evan Glass, chair of the Transportation & Environment Committee, applauded the order, noting he had previously introduced two related pieces of legislation — a Data Center Task Force bill in January and a six-month pause bill in May — both of which failed to gain cosponsors. Glass called for a task force or working group to be established during the moratorium to evaluate risks and benefits of data center development.
