County Signs Bill Restricting Firearms Near Public Spaces

County Executive Marc Elrich and Councilmember Dawn Luedtke (District 7) signed Expedited Bill 23-26E on July 27, 2026, updating Montgomery County's firearms law following a Maryland Supreme Court decision. The bill maintains the County's prohibition on carrying firearms within 100 yards of sensitive public places — including schools, parks, libraries, and polling places — while removing provisions the Court determined must be regulated at the State level. The legislation also repeals the County's previous ghost gun restriction in the presence of minors and establishes a limited travel exemption for concealed-carry permit holders on public highways through restricted areas.
