Maryland Work Zone Speed Fines Tiered, Doubled When Workers Present
MCDOTApr 23, 2026
Under the Maryland Road Workers Protection Act, effective January 1, 2025, work zone speeding fines follow a tiered system ranging from $60 (12–15 mph over the limit) to $500 (40+ mph over), with fines doubling when workers are present. Maryland's Move Over Law also requires drivers to change lanes or slow down for any stopped vehicle displaying warning signals, with violations subject to fines or license points. More than 250 work zone crashes have occurred in Maryland in 2026 so far, following 8,241 crashes statewide since 2020 that resulted in 57 fatalities.
