MCPS Student Climate Council Urges Upcycling Over New Purchases

The Montgomery County Public Schools Student Climate Action Council (SCAC), comprising 18 students, has issued a public message urging residents to upcycle or purchase secondhand winter clothing rather than buying new items. The council notes that roughly 65% of clothing produced annually ends up in landfills within a year, with synthetic winter materials taking centuries to decompose. SCAC works with MCPS to advance sustainability initiatives across school clusters.
