Nation's Largest Transit Depot Microgrid Completed at Derwood EMTOC

Montgomery County officials and partners celebrated the completion of a 6.8-megawatt microgrid at the David F. Bone Equipment Maintenance and Transit Operation Center (EMTOC) in Derwood on April 30, 2026. The system includes 9,800 solar panels across 16 canopies, 2 MW / 6.9 MWh of battery energy storage, and 2.375 MW of EV charging capacity to support up to 200 Ride On buses. The project was built under an Energy as a Service model with AlphaStruxure and received a $1.6 million Maryland Energy Administration grant, with no capital cost to the County.
