Nation's Largest Transit Depot Microgrid Opens in Derwood

MCDOT Apr 30, 2026
Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich, Lt. Gov. Aruna Miller, and Council Vice President Marilyn Balcombe hosted a ribbon cutting on April 30, 2026 at the David F. Bone Equipment Maintenance & Transit Operation Center (EMTOC) in Derwood. The completed microgrid — described as the largest transit depot microgrid in the United States — integrates 4.8 megawatts of on-site solar generation, 2 megawatts of battery energy storage, and 2.375 megawatts of charging capacity. The system is designed to support approximately 200 battery-electric and hydrogen-electric buses and can operate in 'island mode,' independent of the utility grid, in support of the county's goal of a zero-emission bus fleet by 2035.
