Post-Storm Salt Runoff Threatens County Waterways

DEP Feb 5, 2026
Following an 8-day winter storm with freezing temperatures, the Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection is alerting residents to the ongoing environmental impact of oversalting. Excess salt left on sidewalks and driveways washes into waterways and drinking water supplies as ice melts, with county salt levels trending upward over the past 30 years. Residents can sweep up excess salt and report oversalting via 311.
