Jawando Raises Concerns Over SSIMS, Sligo Creek School Closures

Councilmember Will Jawando, chair of the Education and Culture Committee, issued a statement Dec. 11, 2025, raising concerns about the proposed closure of Silver Spring International Middle School and relocation of Sligo Creek Elementary School as part of MCPS's recommended FY 2027 Capital Budget. Jawando cited an inadequate five-week window between announcement and Board vote for meaningful community engagement, and noted the proposal involves $281 million in capital investments. County Executive Elrich is expected to present his recommendations on Jan. 15, 2026, with the County Council making the final decision.
