County Backs 74,000 Salvadoran Residents Amid TPS Uncertainty

Fani-González Sep 9, 2026
Council President Natali Fani-González announced on September 9, 2026 that Montgomery County stands in solidarity with Salvadoran Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders and other TPS-designated community members facing uncertainty about their immigration status. The county notes that over 74,000 Montgomery County residents identify as Salvadoran — the largest Latino community in the county — and that El Salvador has held TPS designation since 2001. Salvadoran TPS holders contribute an estimated $965 million annually to the Washington metro area economy.
