Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich issued a statement on Feb. 11, 2026 mourning the death of Rev. Dr. Ruby Reese Moone, a civil rights leader who worked alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and participated in the Selma to Montgomery marches. Moone served as a guidance counselor at Poolesville High School for four decades and authored the proposal that created a career center within Montgomery County Public Schools. She was a founding figure of the Montgomery County NAACP chapter and was recognized as a Montgomery County Living Legend and inducted into the Montgomery County Human Rights Hall of Fame in 2019.
