Elrich Signs Six-Month Data Center Development Moratorium

Fani-González Jun 12, 2026
County Executive Marc Elrich signed an executive order on June 12, 2026 placing a six-month moratorium on data center development in Montgomery County. Council President Natali Fani-González welcomed the pause, stating it provides time to finalize Zoning Text Amendment 26-01, which would restrict data centers to industrial zones under conditional-use review. Under current zoning, data centers can be sited anywhere in the county as they are classified as cable communications systems.
