Maryland Heat Awareness Week Highlights Rising Heat-Related Illness Data
DHHSMay 27, 2026
Maryland's Heat Awareness Week ran May 18–25, 2026, as state data showed more than 1,600 emergency department and urgent care visits for heat-related illnesses last year — more than double the 2022 and 2023 figures — along with 35 heat-related deaths statewide. Maryland launched a new Weather-Related Illness Data Dashboard as a centralized source for current heat and cold illness data. DHHS participates in the County's Extreme Temperature Response Plan and supports Hyperthermia and Heat Emergency Alerts.
