Maryland Workers Have Heat Safety Rights at 100°F Index

MCPIO Jul 14, 2026
Montgomery County officials reminded workers in outdoor and hot-environment jobs — including construction, agriculture, landscaping, and kitchens — that Maryland law entitles them to water, shade, and rest during extreme heat. When the heat index reaches 100°F, employers are required to provide at least 15 minutes of rest per hour. Information on worker rights, employer responsibilities, and how to file a complaint is available on the Be Cool Montgomery website.
