Supreme Court Allows Asylum Seekers to Be Turned Away Before U.S. Entry

In a second ruling issued June 25, 2026, the Supreme Court held that the federal government may turn away people seeking asylum before they set foot on U.S. soil. The decision blocks families fleeing violence and persecution from formally requesting asylum at the border. County Executive Marc Elrich stated that Montgomery County will continue to receive people fleeing harm with dignity and that county health and human services remain open to all residents regardless of immigration status.
